Since early 2010 we have been using a German method of fixation for left sided Displaced Abomasum (DA) in dairy cows.
It involves using a laparosope (key hole Surgery).
Two small holes are made in the left flank - one for a camera and the other to pass specialised instruments into the abdomen.
The idea is that the surgery is less invasive and recovery rates are faster. At present we are using this technique on selected cases but anticipate that as our experience and technique improves that this system will become the norm.
We will discuss the options with each individual case.
As of Summer 2010 we have performed 21 procedures using this new technique to the UK.
